Tesla 'Gen 3 Wall Connector

Tesla doesn’t need any introductions. They’re amongst the most well-known companies in the world, and at the cutting edge of greener technologies.

Tesla’s Gen 3 wall connector EV charging solution is sleek and stylish, with some really cool features that you’d expect with any Tesla product.

Most notably (and somewhat surprisingly), Tesla’s Gen 3 wall connector is amongst the most affordable EV chargers on the market, meaning the return on investment is super quick compared to some. They come with the best warranty of all EV chargers on the market (4 years), too.

And they look fantastic! Tesla’s Gen 3 wall connector comes with a stylish charger holster and an interchangeable tempered-glass cover plate to fit any setting.

Charging Modes:

Unfortunately, Tesla doesn’t yet come with PV integration or eco-charging modes. They do, however, boast some nifty features that other basic EV chargers do not.

POWER-SHARING MODE.

The power-sharing (load balancing) mode is very cool, allowing up to 3 electric vehicles to load-share at any one time. Great for apartments or homes with multiple Electric vehicles.

SCHEDULED CHARGING.

Taking a look at the calculation, we figured out that a 100km trip in an electric vehicle would cost us approximately $3.36 in purchased electricity from the grid. So, what if we were to offset that purchased energy with solar the solar we produced?

The cost of charging your Electric Vehicle from your solar system

At first thought you’d think charging your EV from your solar system would be free! 

Which is somewhat correct as you’re not paying for the solar energy you’re producing. Technically speaking though, the solar that would ordinarily be sold back to the grid via your solar feed-in tariff is now being redirected to your Electric Vehicle, so you’re missing out on those returns.

An average feed in tariff rate (at the time of writing) in SE Queensland is around 8c/kwh, so we’ll use this as the cost for the following calculations.

As mentioned earlier, an Electric Vehicle will require around 16kWh of charge to travel 100km. Given the assumed solar feed-in tariff rate of 8c/ kWh you’d be looking at the princely sum of:

$0.08 x 16 = $1.28 to travel from Brisbane City to Burleigh Heads!

Power vs Energy.

The first thing you’ll need to understand is the difference between a kW and a kwH (or power vs energy) when charging your EV.

Power

kW - refers to how quickly you can charge your EV battery. Home charging works at speeds from 1 kW up to 22 kW.

Energy

KWh-refers to the amount of energy your car's battery can store. An electric car will travel about 6 km for every kWh of charge.

How much will buying an Electric Vehicle really save me on petrol?

Most conversations we have with EV owners about why they choose an EV over a petrol guzzler uncover three main points.

Let’s crunch some numbers to determine the price difference between a petrol car and an Electric Vehicle.

Ok, so assuming the price of fuel is around $1.80 per litre, and the standard petrol car will travel 10km’s per litre of fuel, a trip from Brisbane City to Burleigh Heads (approximately 100km) will cost you $18 one way… ouch!

In comparison, an Electric Vehicle will require around 16kWh of charge to travel the same distance. An average cost for kWh of electricity in South East Queensland (at the time of writing) is 21 cents. So, $0.21 x 16 = $3.36 to travel from Brisbane City to Burleigh Heads.

It’s pretty clear who the winner is. And that’s without taking into account ways to further save on your EV fuel costs. That’s right, going solar!

Frequently Asked Questions.

An EV Charger is basically just like an extension lead you’d find in your home, although able to handle a lot more power! It’s a way of sending AC power from the electricity grid (or your solar) to your vehicles battery to charge it.

All new EV’s come with a standard 10A charger – a ‘type 1’, although they are extremely slow, adding around 10km’s of charge per hour. A ‘type 2’ EV Charger can send 7kW-22kW worth of electricity to your vehicle, adding 40-130km’s of charge in one hour. Much better! 

There’s a range of different brands and models offering basic charging, to solar smart charging, to whole of house load management.

The cost of running an electric vehicle is significantly cheaper than its petrol or diesel counterpart. Based on recent prices of electricity vs petrol, you’d expect the same trip to be 5-6 times more expensive in a petrol vehicle, and that’s without a solar power system to help subsidise the rates!

You definitely do not need solar to have an EV charger installed at your place. Although solar is a great way of further benefit from the cheaper running costs of an electric vehicle, solar isn’t always practical depending on things like shading issues, available roof space or even just a customers budget.

The rate of charge depends on a few different factors. A standard single phase EV charger outputs approximately 7kW of power, whereas it’s 3 phase counter-part can output up to 22kW. The charge rate may also be slightly slower depending the rate of each individual cars built in inverter capabilities.

As a general rule of thumb, a single phase EV charger will add approximately 40km of charge in 1 hour and a three phase EV charger approximately 130km worth of charge in 1 hour.

90% of houses these days have the capacity to accommodate a high powered electric vehicle charger. In some cases though, a property’s mains cabling (especially houses built before 1980) are too small to handle the load of an EV Charger.

Decades ago, 6mm mains were all that was required to power a house as the loads were much smaller back then (a few lights and power points), and a 32A supply for the whole house is all that was required. A standard single-phase EV Charger draws 32A by itself! 

Having a quality installation company is so important in this scenario, in order to carry out an inspection of your homes supply, and either upgrade the mains to suit the additional load, or limit the output of the charger to suit.
